Title

Almanacco illustrato dell'Elvezia: dono agli abbonati del 1895 [Illustrated Almanac of the "Elvezia", a gift for its subscribers in 1895]. San Francisco: L'Elvezia, [1894].

Description

One of the earlier of the almanacs (of about 6 or 7) in the Collection. This 1895 Italo-Svizzero Americano almanac was published in San Francisco, Pietro Magetti handwritten owner name on cover.

This is the "Supplemento all'Elvezia no. 7" that appears to have been given as a "strenna" or Christmas gift to subscribers ("dono agli abbonati") of this Italo-Swiss San Francisco newspaper.

In the back of this very rare work is a 32-page book catalogue (in pink) of the Libreria Italiana dell'Elvezia, George Cavalli, proprietor. It is a treasure trove of books imported from Italy (mostly - there is Zanolini among New York publications) for any researcher wondering what Italian immigrants in San Francisco in that period in late 19th century were reading (or were being offered to read - as discussed elsewhere on this site, there were "normative" reading lists for Italian immigrants that may have only loosely approximated what Italians were actually reading) .

The headings of various sections, e.g., "Biblioteca Romantica Tascabile" (Romantic pocket-size Library) reflect the categories used by book publishers in Italy. Advertisements by New York booksellers at the time in Il Progresso and L'Eco d'Italia of imported Italian books are similar. A wide variety of content, from biographies (with portraits) of prominent Italian and Swiss-Americans to notable figures in Italy and Switzerland.

Much of the information is focused on the canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland, near the Italian border. There are also long sections of illustrated stories.

Apart from the book ads, the text of the almanac also contains advertisements for numerous Italian businesses in San Francisco, from banks to travel agents, booksellers, printers, hotels, and dealers in musical instruments.

No copies of this work are listed in OCLC.
