Title

Saggi de' novellieri italiani d'ogni secolo [Samples of Italian Short Story Writers of Each Century: drawn from the most celebrated writers, with brief notes on the life of each one of them]. Boston: Gray e Bowen, 1832.

Description

This is one of several works in the Collection that, while shedding no light on Italian immigration in America, and not authored by an Italian in America, nevertheless merits inclusion as part of the "pre-history" of Italians in America.

Although remembered now for his poetry, Longfellow was first and foremost a scholar and teacher of several foreign languages, Italian included. This work, Longfellow’s first published study in Italian, is a reader containing stories of many Renaissance authors, including Boccaccio and Machiavelli, and was printed during Longfellow’s professorship at his alma mater, Bowdoin College, in Maine. Following his time at Bowdoin, in 1836 he succeeded George Ticknor as professor of modern languages at Harvard.
