Title
La via del Paradiso [The Way of Paradise]. New York: Casa ed. N. Morgillo, [1909].
Description
A curious play with Saint Peter, Pope Pius VI, Vittorio Emanuele II, Garibaldi, all at the entrance to heaven. "Pietro" (mispelled "Pitero") says to himself, "It's really worth the trouble to abandon the lake, the fishing nets, the free life, to follow Christ as he gets himself nailed to the cross in pagan Rome."
The same work was also published in 1909 in Lugano by the Tipografica luganese in the Biblioteca Socialista series. Oddly enough, the three Italian libraries that hold copies of the work have the U.S., not the Italian one. A copy of the Luganese imprint is at the IISH in Amsterdam.
From the Dizionario biografico dei friulani, we learn that Ercole Pompeo Brovelli (b. 1872 Pallanza - d. 1940 Udine) was an activist at an early age in the Parti Socialista Italiana. He emigrated from Italy in 1890 to Switzerland, where he was a union organizer; later he was expelled from the capital city of Bern for having organized a demonstration of solidarity with Ettor and Giovannitti in their leadership of the Lawrence textile strike of 1912, q.v.
He became involved in electoral politics in Italy upon his return, but also organized anti-militaristic activities during the First World War. Despite his support for the Lawrence strike, there's no evidence in this bio or otherwise that he spent time in the U.S.
Unless there's more than meets the eye here in this work, hard to figure out how the themes of this work fit into the political activism of Brovelli.
