Author Ragusa was professor of Italian at Columbia University for most of her career, linked to the Casa Italiana at Columbia including especially under Giuseppe Prezzolini. She was the daughter of the bookseller about whom she writes, Andrea Ragusa, who owned and operated Vanni's, perhaps New York's best-known Italian bookstore (mostly imports).
