This is a fine early collection of essays by both Italian American and Italian scholars about the emigration and work of Italians in the U.S. The essays arise from a symposium of American studies at Florence in May 1969, very soon after the beginning of the academic field of Italian American studies. All but two of the essays are in Italian. The collection also contains the Arno Press (New York Times) reprint of these essays.

This volume includes Pietro Russo's important "La stampa periodica italo-americana," a basic work for understanding the Italian-American press. See fuller description in the Arno Press reprint version of this work.

Besides Rudolf Vecolii's introduction on the American sources for the study of Italian immigration, there are also essays by Margherita Ciacci (on the linguistic comportment of emigrant Italians), Edoardo Del Vecchio, Luciano Iorizzo (reappraisal of Italian leadership in Central New York State), Salvatore Lagumina (on immigrants and politics), Anna Maria Martellone, Salvatore Mondello (on crime), Pellegrino Nazzaro (on the Immigrant Quota Act of 1921), Nicoletta Pardi Corbella (on a tailors' union), Malcolm Sylvers (on Sicilian socialists in Houston), SIlvano Tomasi (the Italian American church as aid in the process of integrating immigrants in the U.S.), and  Joseph Velikonja (on Italians of Tontitown, Arkansas and Rosati, Missouri).
