Description

One act of this recovered (by Durante) play is reproduced in Durante.

Giuseppe Petrosino was the first head of the Italian squad of the New York City Police Department, and in charge of investigating the Mafia and its crimes in New York. On assignment, he went to Italy, where he was famously assassinated by the Mafia because of his work in prosecuting its members in New York. He became a hero in the Italian community in New York because of his sacrifice of his life to the cause.

Of Ciambelli (b. Lucca, Italy, 1862 - d. New York, NY, 1931), the greatest (and most prolific) of the Italian novelists working in the U.S. in the late 19th century into the third decade of the 20th c., see the extended biographical sketch in  La trovatella di Mulberry Street.
