Description

For several years, I had a facsimile copy of this important work. Then to my surprise, the original - impossible to find - became available.

Carlo Camillo Di Rudio (1832-1910), one of the most colorful of 19th century Italian immigrants, to be sure, was an Italian aristocrat, patriot and naturalized American who left an Austrian military school in Milan to join patriots in the uprising of 1848, joining in the defense of Rome and then of Venice against the Austrians. He participated in the failed assassination attempt on Napoleon III, as a "complice" (accomplice) of Felice Orsini. These two were among the four men implicated in the plot against Napoleon III. Only a successful appeal for clemency commuted his sentence of death by the guillotine, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment at Devil's Island, from which he escaped with others several months later.

He emigrated to New York City in 1860, joined the Army and soon became a career U.S. Army soldier who fought in the 7th U.S. Cavalry at the battle of Little Bighorn, barely surviving, hidden for 36 hours. He remained in the Army for most of the rest of his life, but moved to San Francisco, where he must have met Crespi and where he was buried.
