Description

This work is important in and of itself as the exemplar of the kind of plays that socialists and anarchists staged during their celebrations of Primo Maggio. Moreover, it is authored by perhaps the most important of all the international anarchists, Pietro Gori, and is one of the best illustrations of the international nature of publication by radical Italians.

It was published in a city and province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, by Camillo di Sciullo, an anarchist who wrote for La Questione Sociale of Paterson, New Jersey, an important radical newspaper which many authors in the Collection edited or wrote for, q.v. Moreover, the preface by Gori is dated "Kansas City, Mo., Marzo 1896."

The inner front cover is Di Sciullo's ad for his Chieti publications to be found in Rome, Mantova, and "in America: presso la LIBRERIA SOCIOLOGICA, 495 Madison Avenue - Paterson, N.J." His marketing included bulk sales, for 100 copies of any work a 25% discount would be applied.

Marcella Bencivenni's Italian Immigrant Radical Culture has a good discussion of Gori's "sketch" and its place in the culture of the sovversivi. Jennifer Guglielmo's Living the Revolution also discusses Di Sciullo's attitudes toward anarchist feminism.
