Gli italiani di New York. [The Italians of New York]. New York: Labor Press, 1939.
Description
This Italian version of the original WPA Guide "The Italians of New York" was "riveduta ed ampliata da Aberto Cupelli" (revised and expanded by Alberto Cupelli); sponsored by Guilds Commmittee for Federal Writers Publications, Inc.
The WPA Guides to various cities and, mostly, states of the United States are one of more enduring products of the Works Progress Administration set up by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a way to employ writers, as other WPA and New Deal programs generally did for the country. Jerre Mangione was a principal author of that work. There are indeed some "expanded" parts in this Italian version, including especially about the various Italian-language bookstores and publishers. It provides one of the best contemporary overviews of the Italian language press of the period.
