Title

Serenatella: versi di Libero Bovio [Serenatella: verses by Libero Bovio]. New York: Italian Book Company, 1918.

Description

The Italian Book Company is nominally the "publisher," but in fact it's really only the copyright holder in the U.S., as noted at the bottom of the second page of this sheet music.

In fact, on the cover the work is noted as the "property of the publisher for all countries," and all rights reserved - of the Casa Editrice Musicale "La Canzonetta"  - Francesco Feola, Proprietor - of Naples.

On the cover, as well, the price in American currency is stamped somewhat illegibly just below the actual printed price in Italy, "Prezzo netto Lire 2,40." That IBC was holder of the U.S. copyright is printed in Italy on the sheet music (that is, not stamped in New York), given the several typos (and reversal of the U.S. copyright holder's name in Italian) and substitute of the letter "w" with two "v's" by the Italian printer, "w" a letter not used in Italian: "Copyright in the U.S. 1918 by Italian Book Co. - Nevv-York| of the copyrigth [sic]. Sole Agent. [sic] for: Libraria Italiana Società [sic] 145- 147 Mulberry St. Nevv--Yorh [sic]."

The importation by the Italian Book Company, or Società Libraria Italiana, from Italy to New York of sheet music of new and traditional Italian songs was a significant part of the IBC's business in its early decades of existence. Business records of the company reveal the contractual arrangements. The year of copyright in the U.S. is about 7 years after the song was first published in Italy.

Songs by Libero Bovio are available on Spotify, sung by popular singer Roberto Murolo. In this particular work, the verses (not the music) are by Bovio while the music is that of Vinzenzo Medina.

On the verso of the cover page, the reader is told where a playing record of the song can be found in Naples.

First issued by the Italian publisher in 1911, a recording of Serenatella by Alfredo Del Pelo can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KZgeLrJkd4.
