Description
Bernardy was a pioneering journalist in Italy in the early 20th century, and published this work on social life in Italian America. Born in 1880 in Florence, daughter of a Savoyard Italian mother and the American consul to Florence, she wrote for the popular Il Corriere della Sera (The Evening Courier) and for the Italian magazine La Donna (Woman).
She loved to travel, and in seeing how poorly Italians fared after they emigrated, not unlike Adolfo Rossi, q.v., the immigration of Italians became her regular journalistic theme. She denounced Italy’s failure to provide for its emigrants in other countries, especially given the deplorable conditions in which Italians worked in American factories.
