Title

La battaglia dell'Italia negli Stati Uniti - 1925-1926: articoli e note polemiche; con ritratto e autografo di Benito Mussolini [The Battle of Italy in the United States - 1925-1926: essays and polemical notes; with a portrait and autograph of Benito Mussolini]. New York: Il Carroccio Publ. Co., 1927.

Description

This work consists of polemical articles (against syndicalists and other enemies of fascism) from the prior two years of Il Carroccio as publisher, not simply as printer (as in the case of De Fiori's Mussolini).

De Biasi (b. Sant-Angelo dei Lombardi (Avellino), Italy, 1875 - d. New York, NY 1964) arrived in New York in 1900, was employed by Il Progresso, and a year later, became subeditor. In 1905, already joint owner and director of Il Telegrafo, with his brother Pasquale he founded L'Opnione in Philadelphia, and then went on to work for L'Araldo Italiano of New York.

He was the founding director and editor in chief of Il Carroccio, an early (1915) nationalist and pro-fascist political and literary journal or newspaper, published monthly until 1937 (with some suspension at the end of the 1920s due to disagreements with the fascist hierarchy).

Facing the title page is the note that the work is "to educate America to the victory of Italy - to agitate among the living who are dead the torch of the dead who remain alive."

Its strong support of Mussolini is suggested by the tipped-in plate that is a photographic portrait of Il Duce with an "autograph" inscription to De Biasi that was probably in all copies.

The newspaper or magazine was elegant and well-written, especially compared to the daily and often rushed Il Progress Italo-Americano. Il Carroccio was a literary as well as political journal, and published stories by several women writers. The collection contains more than a decade of issues of Il Carroccio, one of its most complete holdings of any periodical.
