Description

In rooting for Italy’s colonialist ventures (as he would root years later for Mussolini), the publisher Antonio De Martino lost no time: a state of war, as is noted early on in this work, had only just been declared by Italy against Turkey on September 29, 1911, the year of publication of this work. Tripoli italiana reflects the patriotic spirit felt by most Italians living in America, which reflected itself in support for Italy’s several imperialistic (and usually disastrous) adventures in Africa.

As would later be the case with the more sympathetic Italian war with Austria (see Paolo Pallavicini’s La guerra italo-austriaca (1915-1919)), the publisher celebrated Italian actions in the same year the war ended.

This one concerned the war between Italy and Turkey over Tripoli, bordered on the west by Tunisia and on the east by Egypt. This unwavering patriotic fervor was in obvious contrast to the opposition of the radicals, who vigorously protested such ventures (see, e.g., “A Basso [sic] con Mussolini e il fascismo! …. A Basso La Guerra…”).
