Perhaps reflecting how early in the period of the Great Migration he was writing, Cavallaro’s work is not about Italians, but rather sets forth the “life and the works of illustrious men in the history of America.”
This is one of the few items in the collection from the important early New York publisher of Italian works, Frugone, Balletto & Pellegatti. In the late 19th century, when the firm was just Frugone & Balletto, the publishers made an early “find” of Bernardino Ciambelli, publishing seven novels of the greatest Italian language fiction writer to come from the “colonia italiana”. The 1906 edition of The Trow Copartnership and Corporation Directory of the City of New York lists “Frugone, Balletto & Pellegatti Publishers.” As the 1901 Trow's directory only lists Frugone & Balletto, the addition of Pellegatti occurred shortly before publication of this work.
Pionieri ed eroi contains appendices about the Declaration of Independence, the “real war cry of an oppressed people yearning for liberty,” and the United States Constitution, “said by Gladstone to be the most stupendous work that the mind of man has ever produced.”
Cavallaro, of whom little is known, dedicated his work with reverent affection to Dr. Melville Knox Bailey, founder and president of the Italo-American Educational League, “ardent apostle of the instruction and well being of the Italians in America.”
