Title

Strenna almanacco anno 1919 e catalogo generale della Libreria Banca Tocci [Free Almanac for the year 1919 and General Catalogue of the Banca Tocci Bookstore]. New York: Libreria Banca Tocci, 1919.

Description

See my essay (on the site) Italian American Book Publishing and Book Selling, for a discussion of this work.

C. Calvosa (of whom Durante says nothing) signed the introductory note. Francesco Tocci, perhaps deceased by 1919, was the nephew of the founder of the Banca Tocci, Felice. The younger Tocci had had his own book publishing house, and was the first president of the Società Libraria Italiana, the Italian Book Company.

About 160 of the 192 pages of the catalogue are devoted to books, and some sheet music; the rest of the catalogue contains ads for musical instruments, guns, pictures, and shaving and haircutting equipment.

Unfortunately, the names of the authors of most books (especially where the work is from a US-based publisher, like the Italian and English grammars) are missing. Only when the author is a popular writer from Italy, e.g., Carolina Invernizio - 17 of her novels each have full-page illustrated ads - or a classical author, like Dante, is the author's name listed along with the title.
