Title

Secondo libro del manuale per imparare la lingua inglese senza maestro. Contenente storiette amene ed il segretario spedito [Second Manual for Learning the English Language without a Teacher. Containing pleasant stories and a quick secretary] [Facsimile]. New York: [n.p.], 1886.

Description

This second grammar by Bassetti followed hard on what he described in ads as the success of the first one. Designed especially for immigrant Italians, it contained worksheets and both correct spelling and phonetic spelling of English words to help immigrants speak English so they could be understood.

See the essay on Augusto Bassetti in the "Essays" section.

Almost daily between 1885 and 1890, he advertised in Il Progresso Italo-Americano and L'Eco d'Italia his first and second grammars for learning English, a short Italian-English/English-Italian dictionary, and two novels.

Bassetti seems to have been trained as a musician, and first shows up in 1850s New York pursuing a visiting Italian soprano, Marietta Piccolomini, writing her love letters and delivering them backstage, letters that Piccolomini, who got married the following year, almost surprisingly preserved and which are kept in the municipal archives in Siena. In the 1860s, he gave one or more public lectures on opera after an operatic performance; one was reported in the New York newspapers.
