Description

Note the use of "teorico-pratica [theoretical-practical]," a term that Zanolini, alone of the American Italian grammar writers, would use. It presumably tells the prospective purchaser that the book is accurate and precise, following all rules, but, at the same time, also for practical use in daily life and social intercourse with others, not primarily or even solely for reading.

Cann's grammar was one of the standard English grammar written for Italians but not, as I have noted elsewhere, for Italian immigrants but rather for Italians in Italy who likely had more formal education than most Italian immigrants to the U.S.

It was advertised for sale in the U.S., however, in L'Eco d'Italia in the 1870s and in Il Progresso in the 1880s, available at the bookstores both newspapers had. This was well before Augusto Bassetti in 1885 published the first native (i.e., U.S. issued) grammar for Italian immigrants. See on the website my essay on Bassetti: "Augusto Bassetti and the First English Grammar for Italian Speakers Written and Published in the United States."
