Title

Le variazioni [Changes]. New York: Il Carroccio Publ. Co., 1916.

Description

This is the rare "secondo impressione/ secondo migliaio" in books published by Italians. Note that though published by Il Carroccio, the book was printed by Emporium Press, Francesco Tocci's shop. (Soon after this 1916 publication, Il Carroccio seemed to do its own printing.)

Despite its always nationalistic, and later pro-fascist, political ideology, Il Carroccio published fiction and poetry of all types, both in serial publication and through its book publishing arm, as in this work. The lyrical poems of Le variazioni include songs of praise of nature, but also sad songs of memory and of exile, sometimes dedicated to the glory of the homeland, to “faraway Italy which today suffers a holocaust to the demon of war but will reemerge tomorrow redeemed and immortal.”

Fusco was based in Pittsburgh, which contained a substantial Italian community. In the 1905 Italian American Directory, issued about a decade before the appearance of Le variazioni, there are six pages of ads and individual entries about the Italians in that city, but Fusco is not to be found among them.
